While Insomniac have since released a Miles Morales spin-off and announced a standalone Wolverine game, a fully-fledged sequel was only a matter of time. It’s been almost five years since the original hit the shelves, and players are desperate for any slither of information. Insomniac Games are hard at work on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the follow-up to one of the most critically acclaimed superhero games of all time.

The only thing that doesn’t come automatically from collectibles are combat trophies and a few miscellaneous open world trophies. These are all quick to do and enemies keep spawning infinitely after the story in Crimes and Mysteriums. For those with a hazy memory, there is a brief recap of both Peter and Miles’ stories so far available, which is handy, as this is very much a sequel that weaves in both plotlines and characters from the previous games and accompanying DLC. You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent. Avoiding spoilers, the basic premise revolves around Kraven the Hunter, who is, well, craving a hunt. For those uninitiated in the character, he’s essentially The Predator, an Apex hunter blessed with super strength who has chosen New York as his next hunting ground.

They are two of the greatest Spider-Man villains, but they’ll need a good supporting cast to back them up. Or else they’ll have to rely on characters like Big Wheel and Big Man. TG88 falls into the most common pitfall of big open world games. There are so few important landmarks in this version of New York City that the game could’ve taken place in a regular town and felt no different.

But out of this expansive rogues gallery, Venom is the magnum opus that reprises every emotional note the rest of the game has played. Spider-Man 2 foreshadows the looming threat he poses over dozens of its 31 main story missions. Thankfully, you’ll have massively-enhanced gadgetry and powers by the time you finally face him. Spider-Man 2 (PS5) brings back some of the old suits from the previous two games including news suits and outfits for this sequel from vintage suits to what-if scenario costumes. Movement is handled very similarly to the previous games in the series.

There are now three different skill trees to develop as the game progresses. The two individual strands focus on what makes each hero unique, such as Miles’ bioelectricity and invisibility, and Peter’s Spider-Arms and Symbiote powers. On July 20, 2023, we finally got the official story trailer for Spider-Man 2, showing off new details of the story, as well as some gameplay and cutscenes, including the first look at the beefed-up Venom villain in-game. The swinging and combat will be familiar to long-time fans, but a handful of new abilities have been revealed. Many of these come courtesy of the slimy Symbiote suit, which can extend and grow tentacles to slam enemies into the ground. Again, there are very few gameplay details available about Spider-Man 2’s gameplay, but it’s bringing back the open-world version of New York that made the first game so successful.

Ginga Suit – Miles

After Peter viciously defeats the Hunters with his newly enhanced powers, Kraven develops an interest in hunting Peter personally. Eventually, Peter and Miles team up to take Venom down, but Harry is left in a coma as the symbiote is finally destroyed. This leads to two crucial scenes that will lead into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, as Norman Osborn blames Peter for Harry’s situation and meets up with Dr. Otto Octavius to plan how to defeat him. Overall, the game is a phenomenal experience, and its 32 missions are all rich and full of content. The beginning of the game’s third act is arguably the most fun part of the game, as players take control of Venom/ Harry Osborn as he fights out of the Oscorp laboratory.
