The swinging and combat will be familiar to long-time fans, but a handful of new abilities have been revealed. Many of these come courtesy of the slimy Symbiote suit, which can extend and grow tentacles to slam enemies into the ground. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to be released exclusively on the PlayStation 5, and won’t be available on any other platforms at launch. The game’s official website mentions that the game has been “developed for the PlayStation 5 console,” and there is currently no PS4 version listed. While Insomniac have since released a Miles Morales spin-off and announced a standalone Wolverine game, a fully-fledged sequel was only a matter of time.
That being said, Spider-Man (2018) switched perspectives between its characters from mission to mission, and this is set to continue in the sequel. The gameplay revealed so far showed that players will be able to switch webheads at specific moments, allowing players to experience the story from both Peter’s and Miles’ points of view. Two editions of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s PC port will be available at launch. Then there’s the Spider-Man 2 Digital Deluxe Edition, which adds DLC suits for Peter and Miles, early unlocks for items like Peter’s Arachknight Suit and Miles’s Shadow-Spider Suit, and extra skill points at the start of the game.
Meaning both elite-level world class hunters and alien monsters that two superpowered Spider-Men struggle against are done in by a reporter with a stun gun. There is also a variety of side characters that will pop up throughout the adventure. They range in likability, but it helps to make the world more alive. Marvel’s New York will naturally be hiding lots of enigmatic and rewarding secrets in its streets and skylines, but one thing which has been given a Super Hero glow-up are the suits you can unlock for Miles and Peter. They won’t just try to out-fight you, but they’ll also aim to out-think you. Enemies like Kraven the Hunter’s allies use techniques, counters and equipment to stalk Spider-Man like prey, forcing you to change up your tactics.
The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests. Obviously, what you take away from the story and its diverse cast of characters will be unique to you. On the surface, it’s another thrilling superhero story packed full of surprises, cameos, and Easter eggs – but there are deeper meanings to be found here, too. Primarily a Peter Parker story, Spider-Man 2 explores his relationship with MJ and the reintroduction of childhood best friend Harry Osborne into his life.

In order to unlock a skill, you first need to unlock the skill above it in our table. Likewise, unlocking a skill makes the skill directly beneath it available to unlock. If two skills lead to the same skill in the next row, you only need to unlock one of the prerequisite skills to make it available for purchase.

Phin attempts to go through with her plan but this fails as the overloaded reactor almost destroys all of Harlem, and Miles’s mother and his uncle work together to evacuate Harlem. Miles uses that as his chance to talk to Phin, and he convinces her not to go through with it. Ultimately, Phin sacrifices herself to help Miles save the city, by flying him high above the city, so he can release the energy where no one else will be harmed from the explosion besides herself.
The first EMF Experiments will be unlocked after visiting the Emily-May Foundation in “Healing the World.” Once that mission is complete, the experiments will appear scattered across the city. The Family Business Suit is based off of the Legacy comic run where Aaron Davis (The Prowler) wore an iteration of the Iron Spider suit and led The Sinister Six.
Standard open-world filler activities are here aplenty, and that’s one area where Spider-Man 2 hasn’t moved with the times or shown ambition at all. Collectibles, photo opportunities, and rather basic street crimes are still here and, despite having a few slightly more interesting quirks this time around, they only very occasionally excite. You’ll regularly be stopping the same getaways with the same few button presses (the button-mashing from previous games is mercifully largely gone) or stopping a break-in by battering the same few goons.
While the Symbiote Surge is active you have to trigger Symbiote Abilities a total of 25 times. Equip 4 of these abilities and make sure they are all charged and ready before activating the Surge. Then you can spam all 4 abilities in quick succession before the Surge ends. If you still need any combat-related trophies try to pair them up with Collectibles, many of them feature enemies.

This can be a little frustrating in the early stage of the game, when players have fewer abilities to deal with their enemies’ increased power. However, it can be a welcome change in the latter half of the game, when regular fights begin to feel a bit too easy. But even though it’s the highest Challenge Rating available on a first playthrough, it’s still not the most punishing difficulty available. The feature to change the time of day in the game was previously unavailable (even though some players have discovered exploits to do so). But with the latest update for Insomniac’s open sandbox superhero ‘venture, players can now pop into the settings and change the time of day to fit the vibe they’re looking for.

None of that’s necessarily a dealbreaker, though—the real problem is the characters. On the whole it’s a tried and true set-up for a Spider-Man story—the perils of leading a double life, making sacrifices to do the right thing, all that jazz. But that does also mean it’s a story we’ve seen an awful lot of times before, not only across films, TV, and comics, but also in the previous two games in this series. That being said, I can’t help but have hoped for a few more flashes of Gotham City to make their way into New York. That’s not to say there aren’t benefits to taking a sneaky route, though, especially when you’re playing as Miles and using his invisibility power to quietly take out enemies.
